Frederic D. (Fritz) Wolfe and Bruce Thompson founded the company in Lima, Ohio, in 1970 as Health Care Fund, the first healthcare focused real estate investment trust. It changed its name to Health Care REIT in 1985, moved its headquarters to Toledo the following year and became Welltower in September 2015. Shankh Mitra is its chief executive. The logo stacks the words Well and tower in heavy black lowercase letters, with a capital W.
