It designs, develops, manufactures and distributes professional and engineered products, software and services, and its businesses include the test tool maker Fluke and the gas detection company Industrial Scientific.
Fortive was spun off from Danaher in July 2016 and immediately became a component of the S&P 500. Danaher founders Steven and Mitchell Rales kept board seats with Fortive after the separation. The company spun off its automation businesses to Altra Industrial Motion in October 2018 and its transportation and franchise distribution businesses as Vontier in October 2020, and in July 2025 it spun off its precision technologies business as Ralliant Corporation, an independent public company. The logo is a green circular symbol that forms the letter F, next to the name FORTIVE in bold capital letters.
