Citizens Financial Group, Inc. is an American bank holding company headquartered in Providence, Rhode Island. It owns Citizens Bank, N.A., which operates in 14 states and Washington, DC, and as of September 30, 2025 it was the 18th largest bank in the United States.
Citizens was established in 1828 as the High Street Bank in Providence. In 1871 the Rhode Island legislature chartered the Citizens Savings Bank, which later acquired its parent group to form Citizens Trust Company, and Citizens Financial Group was established as a holding company in 1954. The Royal Bank of Scotland Group acquired Citizens in 1988 and expanded it across New England and into Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Delaware, and in 2004 Citizens bought Charter One Financial of Cleveland. Citizens began trading on the New York Stock Exchange as CFG on September 24, 2014, and RBS sold its last stake in October 2015. The logo pairs a green symbol made of arrows, known as the daisy wheel, with the name Citizens in green type.
