PayPal Holdings, Inc. is an American multinational financial technology company that operates an online payments system in the majority of countries that support online money transfers. It is headquartered in San Jose, California, and serves as an electronic alternative to traditional paper methods such as checks and money orders.
PayPal traces its roots to Fieldlink, a company established in December 1998 by Max Levchin, Peter Thiel and Luke Nosek that was later renamed Confinity. The first version of the PayPal payments system launched in 1999. In March 2000 Confinity merged with X.com, an online financial services company cofounded by Elon Musk, and X.com was renamed PayPal in June 2001. PayPal went public on the Nasdaq in 2002 and was bought by eBay on October 3, 2002. eBay spun PayPal off as a separate public company on July 18, 2015, and two days later it was listed again on the Nasdaq under its old symbol, PYPL. The current logo is the PayPal wordmark in bold black letters.
