Ulta Beauty, Inc. is an American chain of cosmetics stores headquartered in Bolingbrook, Illinois. It sells high end and drugstore cosmetics, fragrances, skincare, haircare, nail and bath products along with its own brands, and nearly every Ulta Beauty store has a full service salon.
Ulta was founded in 1990 by Richard E. George, a former president of Osco Drug, and Terry Hanson. It was first called Ulta3, to suggest a third option for buying beauty products beyond a drugstore or a department store, and its first store opened at High Point Centre in Lombard, Illinois, in early October 1990. The name was shortened from Ulta3 to Ulta at the end of 1999, and the company, then called Ulta Salon, Cosmetics & Fragrance, became publicly traded on the Nasdaq on October 25, 2007, where it trades as ULTA. It took the name Ulta Beauty, Inc. in 2017. As of January 31, 2026 it operated 1,591 stores, including 1,505 Ulta Beauty stores in the United States and 86 Space NK stores in the United Kingdom and Ireland. The logo shows the word ULTA in tall capital letters over the word BEAUTY, framed on the left by a curved sweeping line.
