Shopify Inc. is a Canadian multinational online commerce company headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. It runs a cloud platform that lets merchants build online stores and sell in person through point of sale systems, and it has more than five million customers.
Shopify was founded in 2006 by Tobias Lütke, Daniel Weinand and Scott Lake. In 2004 they had launched Snowdevil, an online store for snowboarding equipment, and because Lütke was unhappy with the shop software on the market he built his own using Ruby on Rails. The founders launched the platform as Shopify in June 2006. Shopify opened its App Store for developers in June 2009, launched Shopify Payments with Stripe in August 2013, and went public through an initial public offering on May 21, 2015. Merchants on the platform processed US$292.3 billion in transactions in 2024. The logo is a green shopping bag with a white letter S, beside the name shopify in bold black lowercase letters.
