Harvey Hubbell founded the business as a proprietorship in 1888, opening a small manufacturing plant in Bridgeport, Connecticut. His best known inventions are the United States electrical plug and the pull chain light socket, which he patented in August 1896. In 1905 he incorporated the business as Harvey Hubbell, Incorporated, and in the same year the company registered a trademark described as a sphere with meridian lines and the name Hubbell centered within. Hubbell moved its headquarters from Orange to Shelton, Connecticut, in 2010, and it trades on the New York Stock Exchange as HUBB. The current logo shows the name HUBBELL in black capital letters inside a white oval globe with meridian lines, outlined in black and yellow.
