Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Limited, known as CATL, is a Chinese battery manufacturer and technology company that makes lithium ion batteries for electric vehicles and energy storage systems, as well as battery management systems. It is headquartered in Ningde, Fujian province, where it keeps its flagship manufacturing hub.
CATL was founded in 2011, when a group of Chinese investors led by Robin Zeng and vice chairman Huang Shilin spun off the electric vehicle battery operations of Amperex Technology Limited, a company Zeng had founded in 1999, after acquiring an 85 percent stake. Its Chinese name refers to Ningde, the city where it was founded. CATL went public on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange in June 2018, and it was the largest maker of electric vehicle and energy storage batteries in the world, with a global market share of around 37 percent in 2022 and 36.8 percent in 2023. It announced battery factories in Arnstadt, Germany in 2018 and in Debrecen, Hungary in 2022, and in February 2025 it filed for a secondary listing on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. The logo is the letters CATL in bold blue capitals.
