Otis Worldwide Corporation, which does business as Otis Elevator Company and is styled OTIS, is an American company that develops, manufactures and markets elevators, escalators, moving walkways and related equipment. Based in Farmington, Connecticut, it is the world's largest manufacturer of vertical transportation systems.
In 1852 Elisha Otis invented the safety elevator, which used a special mechanism to lock the car in place if the hoisting rope failed, and after a demonstration at the 1853 New York World's Fair he founded the Otis Elevator Company in Yonkers, New York, in 1853. The company introduced the world's first fully automatic elevator, Collective Control, in 1925, and in 1931 it installed the first double deck elevator at 70 Pine Street in New York City. United Technologies acquired Otis in 1976, and the company was spun off as an independent business in April 2020, when its shares began trading on the New York Stock Exchange as OTIS. Otis elevators serve landmarks such as the Eiffel Tower, the Empire State Building and the Burj Khalifa. The logo is the name OTIS in heavy navy blue capital letters.
